Summary of Monday’s Meeting – January 30, 2012

Next Meeting: February 6, 2012

During the meeting the scouts split into three groups. Each group began work on earning one of three merit badges. The three merit badges offered were Family Life, Citizenship in the Community and Fish and Wildlife Management. Family Life and Citizenship in the Community are Eagle required merit badges. The Fish and Wildlife Management Merit Badge one part of three merit badges needed to earn the Boy Scout World Conservation Award. To earn the award, scouts must complete the Environmental Science Merit Badge, Citizenship in the World Merit Badge and either the Fish and Wildlife Management Merit Badge or the Soil and Water Conservation Merit Badge.

IMPORTANT: FOR THOSE SCOUTS TAKING CITIZENSHIP IN THE COMMUNITY MERIT BADGE, ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6 AT 5:30 P.M., PLEASE MEET MR. STEVE KIRBY AT PDC (Professional Development Center). YOU WILL BE ATTENDING THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING TO COMPLETE ONE OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE MERIT BADGE. AFTER THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING AND TIME PERMITS, THOSE SCOUTS WILL GO TO THE CHURCH FOR THE REGULAR MONDAY MEETING.

On February 25, Troop 87 will make a trip to Cumberland Caverns to camp overnight in the cave and take a wild cave tour. The cost to camp overnight will be $60.00 per scout. Additional details will be discussed at the next few meetings.

On Saturday, March 10, 2012, from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., there will be a Nuclear Science Merit Badge Workshop at Union University White Hall. Troop 87 passed around a signup sheet and will try to take a group to this workshop. However, seats are limited and at this time, we do not know how many are available. The cost for this course will be $5.00. Additional details, such as travel times, will be discussed at the next few meetings.

The summer camp has changed. Troop 87 will be going to Camp Mack Morris for summer camp from June 17, 2012 through June 23, 2012. Details about this year’s summer camp offerings will be announced at a later date. The early bird deposit of $75.00 per scout is due on March 16, 2012. To get the discounted fee, the remaining $120.00 must be paid by April 16, 2012, for a total discounted fee of $195.00. After April 16, 2012, the cost of camp increases to the full fee of $245.00.

The West Tennessee Area Council will be offering National Youth Leadershiop Training (NYLT) at Camp Mack Morris during the week of July 15, 2012 until July 20, 2012. Any scout who is at least 13 years of age, but not yet 18 by the end of the course, has attained at least the First Class rank and has successfully completed two years of Boy Scout summer camp experience may attend the course. Scouts will arrive on Sunday, July 15 at noon and will leave Friday evening around 8:00 p.m. Parents and Scout leaders are encouraged to come Friday evening for the graduation celebration meal, but reservations are required. Scouts from Troop 87 who are interested will have to make their own travel plans to get to Camp Mack Morris for this course. Cost of the week long course is $175.00.

For future Scout Master conferences for rank advancement, scouts will be asked to wear
their Class "A" shirts. For those scouts doing the Scout Master conference to advance from Life to Eagle, they will be requested to wear a complete Class "A" uniform. This is to help prepare the scouts for their Eagle Board of Review, where scouts should present themselves in full Class "A" uniform.

Summary of Monday’s Meeting – January 23, 2012

Next Meeting: January 30, 2012

This weekend, Troop 87 will be camping out at the Fair Grounds. The scouts will have a choice between camping inside in a common area or outside in tents. The weekend will be geared towards completing requirements to advance in rank, especially for scouts who have a ranking of Scout, Tenderfoot, 2nd Class and 1st Class. For scouts with a rank of Star, this is a good opportunity to complete the requirements in training a younger scout using the EDGE method. Troop 87 will meet at the Fair Grounds at 6:00 p.m. on Friday night, Jan 27. Parents should pickup their scouts at 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan 29 from the Fair Grounds. The scouts will need a flashlight and compass. For Friday night, scouts should bring a sack dinner. A menu has been prepared for the remaining meals. Scouts should bring money to cover the cost of the meals.

The summer camp has changed. Troop 87 will be going to Camp Mack Morris for summer camp from June 17, 2012 through June 23, 2012. Details about this year’s summer camp offerings will be announced at a later date.

The following paragraphs are for Scouts who have recently joined Troop 87:

Camping: As a general rule, we try to camp once a month. Most boys will come to camp with a “camp box” that contains all of their gear. The necessary things that they will need include a sleeping bag, some type of mat to provide a barrier between the bag and the ground, pillow, flashlight, compass and some type of camp chair. None of the new scouts should carry a knife until they have earned their Totem Chip. The Troop provides all of the tents and necessary cooking gear. While we don’t mind the boys playing with an IPod touch or cell phone while we are in transit to the camp site, we require that all electronic toys be turned in upon arrival at camp. Our emphasis is outdoor enjoyment.

Uniforms: You will hear us refer to Class A and Class B uniforms. Class B uniforms are t-shirts that specifically say “Troop 87” and/or “Boy Scouts of America.” We specifically wear them while at summer camp, camporees, Winterfest or any West Tennessee Council event. At different times throughout the year, we will order a couple of t-shirts and give all the boys an opportunity to order. However, there are many boys that are no longer active that have many t-shirts in their closets. Feel free to borrow some of them. Prior to summer camp, we will try to round up t-shirts other scouts have out grown or no longer wear. Class A is the tan uniform shirt. The BSA handbook, that all of the boys need to purchase, gives a specific diagram of what and where patches should be on it. The only patch that should be on when they crossover is the Arrow of Light, which they should receive at the Blue & Gold banquet.

Scoutmaster’s Conference: Prior to each rank advancement and after completion of all requirements, each scout is to come to a Scout meeting in his Class A uniform and request a Scoutmaster’s Conference. During this time, we will review all that has been done for rank advancement and make sure the scout has fulfilled all of his obligations. More importantly, we will go about the conference in an “interview” type manner, asking open-ended questions and try to help the boys develop confidence in such settings. Your assistance in helping your sons prepare for these conferences will go a long way.

BSA Health Form: Technically, prior to any scout activity, we are required to have a complete BSA Health Form on all participating scouts, accompanying fathers and scoutmasters. To get the required form, go to our website, click on links and click the West Tennessee Council link. From their home page, click on forms and then BSA Health Forms. No boy is allowed to attend summer camp without a completed, physician signed health form. Dr. Naifeh will usually do pre-camp physicals on a Monday night close to camp time.
